John T. “Doc” McNiff, of Hampton, NH formerly of Maynard and a retired Lieutenant of the Acton Police Department, passed away Wednesday April 3, 2024 at the UMass Medical Center in Worcester. He was 77 years old. He was the beloved husband of Christine (D’Errico) McNiff.
Doc was born in Concord and grew up in Acton son of the late Edmond and Helen (Schnair) McNiff. Upon his graduation from Acton High School, Doc enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served as a Corpsman with the 3rd Battalion 4th Marines in Vietnam. After his honorable service in Vietnam, Doc worked for a time for Emerson Hospital before joining the Acton Police Department. He also worked for many years at Bellows Farm in Acton alongside Dropkick Murphy. Doc rose to the rank of Lieutenant with the police Department and retired in 2001 after many years of service to the town.
Doc enjoyed playing golf and traveling with his wife, especially to Barbados. He also enjoyed playing his guitar. He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends.
In addition to his wife Christine, he is lovingly survived by his two children Lisa and Sean McNiff. He was the grandfather of Grace, Mimi, Stella and James. He also leaves his sister Patricia E. Haras. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister Mary Elizabeth Manion.
Visiting hours were Tuesday, April 9th at the Acton Funeral Home, 470 Massachusetts Avenue (Rte.111) Acton. A funeral Mass was held in St. Bridget’s Church 1 Percival Street Maynard on Wednesday, April 10th at 10:00AM. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery, Great Road, Maynard.
