Brilliant Pitching under a Brilliant Blue Sky

April 30, 2024

Softball fans Monday April 29 were treated to a brilliant blue sky, and even more brilliant pitching, when the Wayland Warriors visited the Acton-Boxborough Revolution (or Colonials, according to the scoreboard) in a Dual County League contest. Hits were in short supply, as A-B’s Tia Gillespie mowed down sixteen Warriors to earn a 2-1 win. She also scattered four hits and walked three. Wayland’s Sophia Beckett struck out eleven batters, giving up four hits and five walks. Each team committed two errors.

In the fifth inning, Ciara Inella scored the eventual winning run after she singled, advanced on a groundout by Tia Gillespie, and was driven home by Margo Abeel’s single.

A-B improves to 5-5, while Wayland drops to 1-5. Coach Nara O’Riley’s Revolution will host league opponent Shrewsbury on May 2 at 4:30.

James Conboy played in the Acton Adult Softball League for seventeen years, and now plays in the EMASS Senior Softball League.

Note from the editors on sports coverage: The Acton Exchange has been planning to introduce sports coverage this coming fall. In the meantime, we received this short article on a girls’ softball game from resident James Conboy. We publish it with the hope that some of you will read it and be inspired to help make sports coverage a reality. We need writers, editors, and photographers interested in covering school and community sports and recreation. We need policies to address issues around fairness and how to cover minors. Most importantly – and most challengingly – we need a committed and talented leader to manage this complex new undertaking. If you are interested in working on this volunteer project – a very fulfilling community effort, our present volunteers say – please write to info@actonexchange.org to let us know. We will convene a sports coverage startup meeting!
