Silent bats spell shutout for Revs
May 24, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School softball field: The A-B Rev’s bats went dormant Friday as they lost to Merrimack Valley Conference opponent Billerica, 2-0. Each pitcher surrendered only five hits on the day, but the Indians strung three together in the third inning to produce both of their runs. Singles by Sophie Ledoux and Bree Courtemanche were followed by a double by Meaghan Downs. The inning ended when A-B third baseman Julia Abeele tagged out Downs after two fine throws from teammates Margot Abeele and Alice Rosecan. Ila Gillespie struck out eleven Indians in the loss.
The next day, Kara O’Riley’s squad traveled to Bedford, where they avenged a previous loss against the Buccaneers, winning 6-3. And on May 30, the 10-10 Rev’s playoffs began, when they hosted Springfield Central in the first round.
Revs clip Golden Eagles’ wings, advance
June 1, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School softball field: The A-B Revolution dispatched the scrappy, but overmatched, Springfield Central High School Golden Eagles Saturday, 17-0, in a mercy-rule shortened game, to move on to the next round in the playoffs. Revs’ pitchers Ila Gillespie and Aislinn Ryan combined for a no-hitter, punching out ten Springfield batters.
A-B scored three runs in the first inning, and six in both the third and fourth innings, when they batted around, meaning the team went through its entire batting order in an inning. The Golden Eagles failed to score in the fifth, triggering the so-called mercy rule to end the game. Catcher Maddie Smith collected four of the Revs twelve hits, while co-captain Clara Innella and pitcher Ila Gillespie each connected for two.
The next day, the Revolution traveled to North Andover to take on the Scarlet Knight for a 1:00 second round game, which they lost 6-1, to end their season with an 11-11 overall record.
