Mt. Calvary Christian Preschool has taken a big step in enriching its outdoor play space, thanks to a $4,355 grant from Lucy’s Legacy Foundation. The nonprofit school, located on Massachusetts Avenue, used the funds to purchase a new climbing set and bridge to enhance the sensory and gross motor experiences available to the children.

Lucy’s Legacy Foundation supports educators and community advocates who are alumni of Wheelock College and of Boston University’s Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. Wheelock College merged with Boston University in 2018.
Mt. Calvary’s grant application was spearheaded by Director Kerri Nekervis and Lead Teacher Becky Myerov, both graduates of Wheelock College. The two educators saw an opportunity to bring more dynamic and versatile play options to the preschool’s outdoor area.
“These additions to our playground provide children with fun ways to develop essential skills, including problem-solving, teamwork, and coordination,” said Nekervis. “The flexibility of the climbing set and bridge allows us to change the structure periodically, keeping the play experience fresh and engaging for years to come.”
Although grant applicants could request up to $3,500, Lucy’s Legacy Foundation opted to award the school a greater amount—enough to cover the full cost of the project.
“Becky and I have always been proud graduates of Wheelock, and we’re incredibly grateful for the way it continues to support alums in offering excellent educational experiences,” said Nekervis.
Mt. Calvary Christian Preschool serves children ages 2.9 to 6. All of its staff members attend continuing education classes and workshops to keep current on the field of Early Childhood Education. More information is available at mtcalvarypreschool.org.
