English at Large (EAL) is a nonprofit organization that helps adult immigrants gain greater understanding of the English language and U.S. culture through personalized instructional programs designed to support their highest aspirations. Last summer, the Acton Exchange quoted several participants’ enthusiastic responses to the EAL conversation group that meets weekly at Acton Memorial Library.

EALearners benefit from a large network of volunteers and community partners in Greater Boston committed to their success. During this past year, 130 local people have provided over 6,000 hours of service, which has made a difference in the lives of nearly 300 local immigrants.

Volunteer Appreciation Week is EAL’s opportunity to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts and community spirit of those who take action to support our immigrant neighbors and friends, by serving as volunteer tutors, conversation group facilitators, beginner English teachers, intake assessors, office and support volunteers, and members of the board and committees.
