Standing ovations for “The Prom” as Open Door Theater’s inclusive production continues

March 22, 2025

Open Door Theater opened its latest musical production on Friday, March 21, with “The Prom: School Edition,” which runs for six performances from March 21-30, 2025, at the Dragonfly Theater in R.J. Grey Junior High School in Acton.

The musical follows four Broadway stars who travel to a small town where controversy has erupted when a student wanted to bring her girlfriend to the high school prom. The production explores themes of acceptance and inclusivity as the Broadway performers join forces with local residents.

On opening night, producer Sam Gould introduced the production to the nearly-sold-out audience, explaining where to take a break if needed, how Deaf actors on stage would be accompanied by interpreters, and how to know when a noisy scene was approaching. This acknowledgement of audience needs is a signature of Open Door’s policy of inclusion on both sides of the curtain.

The show received an enthusiastic standing ovation on opening night. John Furtado, who plays the role of Motel Clerk and serves as an adult ensemble member, said, “Being part of this show is an amazing experience. The people of Open Door have become like family to me.” Furtado noted that the production marked his eighteenth year with the company.

As part of its 45-year commitment to accessible theater, Open Door Theater is making all performances relaxed/sensory-friendly with ASL interpretation and open captioning. The second weekend (March 28-30) will also feature audio description.

Over half of the 50-person cast self-identify as having disabilities, and lead roles are played by members of the LGBTQIA+, Deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse communities.

The production is directed by Brian Kelly with music direction by Rene Pfister and choreography by Becky Robichaud and Loren Beale.

Discounted tickets are available for Massachusetts EBT, WIC, and ConnectorCare cardholders. Accessible seating can be reserved in advance.

Remaining performances are scheduled for:

March 28, 29 at 7:00 pm

March 22 and 30 at 1:00 pm
