K-Mart closed in May of 2019 and the building has been vacant ever since. Last August a six foot high chain link fence was installed that surrounds the property and the gutting of the interior began soon after. Construction is now well underway on the inside and on the outside a new façade is completed and ready for signage.
Stephanie Cunha from the Stop and Shop public relations department offered this statement:
We can confirm that we are building a new Stop & Shop store plus additional retail units at 252 Main Street in Acton to serve the local community. Our hope is to open the new store by late 2024, and we look forward to sharing more details with our local customers soon.
Stop and Shop has more than four hundred stores in the northeast including 125 in Massachusetts. Their corporate office is in Quincy. Other grocery stores in the area include a Stop and Shop on Powder Mill Rd. in South Acton, Roche Brothers also in the Kelly’s Corner area, Trader Joe’s in East Acton, and Donelan’s on 2A in the Gould Plaza.
